For household robots that moment is not yet here. But the right moment to start building is now, because the artifact the industry will need on that day — a psychologically grounded, human-readable, versionable specification of character, reviewable before deployment and auditable after an incident takes time to get right and will be difficult to retrofit onto systems shipped with vibes. Accidental character cannot be diffed against an intended baseline, because there is no baseline.
Today’s NT Personalities are engineered vectors deterministically interpreted within the context of pre-defined models grounded in human psychology. Research consistently identifies several key factors for achieving this long-term adoption. The robot’s ability to exhibit a consistent and understandable personality is vital for shaping the user experience. Users must be able to build rapport with the robot, which requires the robot to exhibit social skills and adapt to the user over time. Crucially, the robot must be perceived as empathetic and trustworthy, especially when it is tasked with caregiving or operating in close proximity to vulnerable individuals. A robot that can recognize a user’s emotional state and respond appropriately is more likely to be accepted and form a positive connection. The Emotion Engine is designed to provide the core functionalities required to meet precisely these challenges.
