Persona Portrait

A fanciful image generated based on a persona's Identity and Core Personality. It serves as a visual index to identify the persona in a crowded library.

The Persona Portrait

A Persona Portrait is an image generated for a persona when it is locked. It appears on the front of the persona’s card in the Gallery and Library, on the Character Study and elsewhere in the application. (Unless Persona card faces is set to Personality Knot Sigil in settings)

What influences it

Two inputs shape every portrait:

  • Identity — the physical characteristics you set: age, sex, ancestry, and so on. These decide who is depicted.
  • Core Personality — the 25 facet values. These shape the subtler choices the image model makes: posture, expression, framing, wardrobe, palette and setting.

The portrait is derived, not decorative. Change the personality and the portrait will be different; a similar persona will yield a similar portrait.

What it is for

A portrait is a visual index. It tells you which persona you are looking at, not what that persona is.

With a handful of personas, names are enough. With dozens, finding the right card becomes a retrieval task, and names are a weak cue for it. Faces are recognized faster and remembered more reliably than names or abstract marks, which makes them the better label on a crowded card grid. The research behind this is covered in Why Use Portraits In NeoThymos?

What it is not

The portrait is not a claim about character. Personality reaches the image only through depiction conventions — what an actor could show you through expression, bearing, wardrobe or a background environment — never through facial features or bone structure. Reading character off a face (physiognomy) does not work, and the portrait does not ask you to try. Its there to help as an identifier.

Read the portrait as a book cover, not as a synopsis of the book.

Managing portraits

  • Only locked personas have portraits.
  • The initial portrait uses the default framing and style set in settings.
  • You can generate a limited number of alternates, steering Look (framing), Style (artistic medium) and Person (keep the current face or try a new one), then choose which one is displayed. See Managing Persona Portraits.
  • The portrait used by a persona can be swapped with any in the set at any time.

The alternative: sigils

If you prefer not to use portraits, substitute the Personality Knot Sigil in settings — on cards, and optionally on the Character Study for all agents. The sigil is generated directly from the personality vector and makes no representational claim. The tradeoff is perceptual: abstract marks are harder to tell apart at a glance than faces.
